My grandmother is also 81. She has pictures from her 13th birthday where she is dressed up as a red cross nurse. Instead of receiving presents, she collected money to donate to the war effort. What different positions those two little girls were in. Comparing snapshots like this really does make me ponder life.

Used to live in Tanzania. I was fluent in Swahili and a long-time resident but people always insisted on calling me Mzungu. Some people wouldn't even call my by my name after they got to know me. Drove me up the wall!

Thank you :) Unless you are obese, then f*ck you. Seriously, though, since I entered medical school I've gained a new appreciation for how carefully you need to look at studies before believing them.

Saw a kid in the ER who swallowed a coin. The mother gave the kid (about 2) a coin to drop in the collection box at church. Upon reaching the collection box, the child was no longer holding the coin.

It was an awesome x-ray, especially since the coins in that country have a funny octagon shape.

Also saw a teenager who popped the metal top off a glass soda bottle with his teeth. The pressure from the bottle shot the top deep into his throat. That x-ray was pretty funny too. The case was not so funny, though, because the edges of those metal tops are sharp.

The procedure to remove the kidney is more invasive than the procedure to put it back it. That's because they remove it from an area with lots of other organs, way up under your ribs. However they put it back in near your pelvis where you don't have much going on.

They do not do a 1:1 replacement in the recipient. Instead they add the third kidney down below. The recipient now has three kidneys.
