Patents ARE "releasing it to the world" -- with a LIMITED time during which the investor can recoup R&D costs and make some profit for his hard work, for example by licensing the technology to anyone who wants to pay for it, or by releasing products himself. Meanwhile, the information is out there for others to learn by and improve upon.

Trade secrets are "not releasing it to the world", but instead locking it up and making a profit off it forever (or as long as the secret can be kept).

What you're apparently looking for is "being a socialist free-riding twatwaffle", which seems to be popular nowadays among the illiterati who want their toys immediately and for free while leaving cutting-edge researchers penniless and starving.
