It goes beyond just being offended. There's a general fear that if you mess with nature (in this case Pele) you will be punished, that your plan will fail and something worse will happen. There's also a sense that even if some houses are destroyed we will persevere and Pele will often deign to spare the things most important to us (for example, most of the Pahoa Japanese Cemetery has been spared, the lava split then merged behind it like a island in a river.)
Basically: Pele does what she wants, don't try to pick a scrap with her.
You'll find that view from a bunch of people, even the completely non religious. It's deeply ingrained in the culture and the stories children are told.

Hi Tom. Did the correspondents get to pick their colors for the debate live blogging? If so, did pea soup forget to reserve his colour?
Would The Economist's staff rather have the ECB run by Silvio Berlusconi or Cristina Fernández?
Is the economist ever going to fix the cookie loophole in the 5 article limit on reading online articles? (Please don't)
If you had to decide between receiving The Economist in magazine form and reading it online what would you choose?

Any news on K.M.'s aspirations to become an astronaut? It would be awesome to have a column from space. Perhaps it could be named "Tardigrade".

I'm pretty sure the lighter red shade is the flow up to October 30, not the flow in a single day.
Edit: yep, the light red is all the lava flow up to October 30 and the deep red is the flow on October 31. See this site for more: http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/maps/
