I would start by getting the non-violent offenders into rehab programs and such. There are people there with first time offenses. They get one year and 1 day in prison. Seriously? I get that they committed a crime but why waste 35K (per person) for one year of care for them? Send them to a rehab or find some other way of "punishing" them. The prison system here is packed!!! Taxpayers spend an enormous amount of money each year caring for these offenders.

Oh yes! There are a lot of "good" inmates. We have orderlies in the medical building. These guys would do anything for the nurses. They are good people who made poor decisions. They have non-violent criminal charges.
If the crap hit the fan and there was a riot, they would protect us in an instant.

No. I still treat them like they are human beings...because they ARE! People make mistakes and it is still my job to care for them, despite their crime.

Not a good feeling. They have learned that I don't take kindly to being gunned and I have NO problems writing disciplinary reports.

We closely monitor diabetics. We actually have all diabetics in one dorm so that they are easier to get to in case of emergencies. We don't currently have anyone on a pump in close management. They aren't severe enough to need one. Special consideration could be made.

We do have diets specifically for diabetics :) Our nurse practitoner is wonderful with the diabetics!
