I am not a gambler, and I have never even exhibited gambling tendencies before. I am a risktaker

Sorry, the two are synonymous. Gambling is more about the high than it is about the money. I realized I had the same problem back in the first .com boom. I was daytrading in and out of positions like a crazy person. I was margined to the hilt, and my story ended up exactly like yours. I gained the world within a few months and then lost almost everything, and became suicidally depressed.

Just know that there is a way back. You're obviously smart, although perhaps not yet wise. Focus on you, focus on a career. Don't ruminate on what you lost or whatever random bet you believe to your downfall. The downfall wasn't that bet. It was that you began the process at all. Your eventual downfall was preordained from that moment forward. It was just a matter of time.

Slow and steady wins the race.

you could probably get a 10KW system up for about 20,000

Unfortunately the way rebates are structured at least our local ones, it would have to be installed by a not only professional, but rather a city approved professional service. It's more of a strategy to keep installers in business than to drive people towards energy independence. I got nothing back from them for the rad barrier I installed, or the mountains of insulation or my low E windows. I'm not sure about the feds. Unfortunately even if they did, it's capped and who knows if carryovers to future years would be allowed.

So my power bill on an average (last bill) is $740kWhours. I have a duplex so assume my tenant's at least if not slightly more than that. Historically my tenants have not been too frugal. High summer figure 30% higher.

Would 10kW cover that? I have no idea how that converts. Is 10kW the smallest system it makes sense to install because the non panel h/w costs more than the panels? I'm green enough that I'd probably consider this move if I was to get payback in 5 years, 10...unlikely, and greater than 10, absolutely unthinkable. The lost opportunity cost is simply too high on that cash, and I don't think it would add enough value on an investment property for me to be able to count on getting it back.

We get some pretty nasty hail in Austin. I lost a car to it a couple years ago. It's like a 3-4 year event for any given area. How robust are these panels now? Do you have to take out a special insurance policy on panels to protect them or would standard homeowners cover it assuming the valuation were raised?

So I installed all my own recessed lighting, ran upgraded copper to my stove and A/C. Have no problems finding my way around a distribution panel, but, have never touched my mains and don't intend to. Does that sound like sufficient skills to DIY? Would I be able to do 95% of it and just hire an electrician to do the final tie in?

Possibly, but being a dick always loses.
