It shouldn't be forgotten that there was something of a hedgemony race at the close of WW2. The U.S. stood to gain a lot by ending the Pacific war quickly and totally on their terms. My personal belief is that the war could have been won simply by starving Japan out. Industry was already collapsing, and people were already going hungry. However, that would have taken a long time, which would have let the Soviets (further) into the picture. Can you imagine the consequences of a Germany or Korea style division in Japan, especially compared to the Western style powerhouse that emerged instead postwar?

It is oft said that if Hitler had died in 1936, he may well have been rememberd as one of Germany's greatest leaders. Fascinating stuff, thank you for doing this AMA!

Amazing, you're living the dream. How does one go about finding a place like that? I'd love an acre or 3 up in Nagano or Yamanashi, but have very little luck finding inexpensive properties on suumo, chintai and the like. Any ideas greatfully received, and if you ever fancy parcelling off a piece of that paradise, do get in touch!

What does one mix baijiu with to make it taste good? Gasoline?
A decade on, I can still remember the unique sense of horror that comes with a shot of baijiu. As well as the puking. Oh god, the puking.
In seriousness, though, good on ya. It's time the world got to experience the stuff.

If the pilot isn't comfortable with a figure, you should probably trust him. Aviation rules are almost always written in blood. A few hours of your time isn't worth becoming a smoking hole in the ground.
