What is the deal with the rabid hatred for LGBT people that is reported on so much?

I was hoping you could give some of your own perspective on the situation. I know that there is a lot of conflict with colonial history, modern-day white evangelicals spreading hate, mis-information and lack of education.

AFAIK Uganda is dealing with similar levels of violent homophobia, but I have business partners in rural Uganda though who had no problem ratifying a non-discrimination clause into their constitution at our request. From their perspective the LGBT hate was something that the extreme religious sector of the cities was spreading, and there just isn't political stamina to fight back on that while so much else is going on.

Anyway, if you have any more comments on the subject I'd like to hear them.
