Where do you feel the future of massage therapy education is heading? I believe massage can be beneficial. I have seen several posts talking about the in-depth biological, physiological, etc didactic training involved in obtaining a massage therapy license. Given that many diseases mimic muscular symptoms, would you agree that further education should be required to become a professional massage therapist? A short unfortunate story: The mother of an old friend of mine was just diagnosed with cancer (pancoast with mets to the spine and brain). A professional massage therapist had been treating her for muscle problems for a while before she saw a doctor and was diagnosed. Albeit the progression of this cancer can produce symptoms a massage therapist may feel they are able to treat, I strongly believe a more rigorous education would have allowed the massage therapist to identify the other symptoms she was having, and referred her to an appropriate health care professional. Thanks for your thoughts.
