Can your wife take over driving long enough for you to get some sleep? Being stuck in stop and go traffic for days on end definitely sounds like torture; I wish all of you the best of luck getting to safety.

From the standpoint of effective altruism is it a preferable strategy to live frugally and save/invest a great deal (rather than giving large amounts to charity) in order to leave the whole pot to charity upon one’s death?

I'm not sure about this, but I'm pretty sure cab drivers are just angry about losing their customers to a better service. Uber has been determined to be legal in many cities already.

They also don't charge for soda/water (only coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol).

Similarly, they don't really charge extra for seat choice: you can pay like $10 extra (Early Bird) for a better spot in line or like $100 extra (Business Select) to be one of the first 15 on the plane.

So yeah, they charge some fees, but it's not as bad as what I've heard about Ryanair.

Disclaimer: have flown Southwest many times, never flown on Ryanair.
