Which is funny, because the only time I ever see it used that way is when somebody is describing something that's barely enforced and not really an inconvenience to anybody, like mods on Reddit putting an [Opinion] tag on stories.

The best thing would be if you could find a local game store and see if they have events where you can play, so that you can learn how the game works around people who can answer your questions as they come up.

Failing that, you can do what a lot of people have done: buy the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and DM's Guide for one version (it should be pretty easy to tell. The style changes between versions pretty substantially), get yourself a dice set, and get reading. This can seem overwhelming, but you and your friends are going to screw up your first couple of times, so it's not a big deal. As long as you're having fun, you're doing it right.
