I have worked in diagnostic imaging for 5 years, my company has centers all over the US. Part of my job is staying on top of pricing across the country. Honestly, I don't know anywhere in the US that $600 wouldn't get you an MRI and the reading done.

You are correct that different types of exams have different costs, depending on the actual ordered exam. Brain vs Chest vs Extremity differs some in cost but its not a huge amount. Contrast costs more, but its not a lot more, $100-$200 higher. Often exams are requested with and without contrast, and the price isn't doubled even though its more than one series.

The key is not going to a hospital unless its an emergency, they have to overprice their rates as radiology is one of the few profitable portions of their business. There are outpatient centers that have the same or better equipment, but can charge less as they don't have the entire hospital overhead.

It sounds stupid, but often its less expensive to claim you don't have insurance and to pay cash (you are supposed to be honest but....just saying...). There are downsides to that of course, if you have insurance the costs would go towards your annual deductible, but out of pocket for the exam itself can be less.

That seems way high for the MRI and having a radiologist read it. I can't speak for what it costs you to have a neuro look at it afterwards.

You should be able to get a MRI at an outpatient center for $600 at most if you pay cash. That is in the US, not sure where you live though.

(Glad it worked out well for you. Crazy how an accident can end up saving your life.)

Are you planning on a future career? Are you in training for anything? (Sorry if its a stupid question, I have no clue.)

Thats great Torre.

Will you be able to live on your own long term, or will you need a service animal or helper?

Late to the party but.....do you still see yourself doing this job in 5 years? Would you have chosen a different path in school if you could do it over?

My wife worked with special ed kids in public schools for about six months. She said it was very hard to do. I have nothing but respect for anybody doing your job.
