People move to a country with a certain value system, get completely disconnected from the home crowd. You'd think their cultural development would be incremental and inline with the home country but usually one of two things happen, they either fully embrace the new culture rejecting completely the old one or they get into defensive mode and try and preserve what is their idea of culture. This is not such a big issue if you are doing a "lateral" immigration leap from say Australia or UK to the US but for a developing country like India which gets more and more educated and liberal with time, the contrast is crazy.Just 15 years back, an ad for shoes with this image created a huge controversy. The moral police were literally hunting down the people involved.Today, newspapers would publish this image and look back and laugh at how conservative we have been. This is only 15 years back, one can only imagine how parents who immigrated in the 60s and 70s must be.

Wow,
Enrolled at 17, you were technically a child soldier, taking lead at 19 and entering what was by your accounts a very major fight. Your perspective of the world must be really skewed.
Apologies if I sound patronizing or condescending, not my intention at all, I am just amazed by the stark contrast, you one one hand and an average American late teen on the other, lazing in bed playing on their xbox or getting wasted.
