What's your opinion on nuclear weapons? Necessary deterrent or morally wrong?

I understand that logic, here in the U.K. There is a lot of support for abolishing our nuclear weapons program due to high cost and the concept of retaliation against potentially innocent citizens that have no control over a dictators actions. I do however agree that the only way there could be none is if all arsenals disappeared, so I'm torn on the issue.
