Thanks for this. I guess I never thought through the implications of ASL being "not English", or better put, "not a phonetic / alphabetic" language (and all that entails). I kind of thought the world would be an easier place since the internet, as much content is transcribed or transcribe-able to a phonetic language in which the deaf person may be culturally situated.

As a developer myself, does any kind of SL notation exist, and has there ever been an attempt to bridge the gap between audio and SL with software? I just assumed that if the audio was in text form, a signer could pick it up from there, but now I see that's not necessarily true.

Spend an hour doing dedupes, lookups, and other manual operations. Save file back to CSV, proceed with the usual incompatibility warnings dialog. Mumble about lack of quoting and delimeter options in Save As dialog. Load csv into the test system, phone numbers bomb out. What? Oh, right. This again - leading zeros and padded numbers got dropped. Go back to Excel. Oops, closed file. Desperately search for xls file. I must have saved as xls, isn't that what the dialog said? Cripes. An hour lost. I really need to automate this process. ... Later that year...
