Would you, in the current job climate, still advise young people to pursue a Ph.D.?

Thanks. I'm currently researching the role that the national unions, the ICFTU and the WCL (and the ILO) played in the solidarity mechanisms concerning the military dictatorships in Latin America. I'm also very intrigued by the global solidarity mechanisms of the unions and their confederations. Now that there (seems to be) a decrease of ideological conflicts in the international trade organizations due to the confluence into the ITUC, do you believe that the productivity of the world trade union has increased? Do you see an improvement in co-operation in the international trade confederation? Second (well, third, sorry about that) question, the effectives of the unions have decreased considerably. In the past, this has happened before during economic recessions. Do you think that, now that the job market might be getting slightly better, the union membership will increase again? Or do you believe that the general opinion ruled that the role of the trade unions has been played out?

Hi Ekkerhard, thanks for being here. What role would you like to see the nations play in the search for solutions for global inequality and unemployment?
