Because American women do most of the shopping. See, the only way you can cope with the difficulty of having this idiot beast around the house is get some more Glade Air Freshener.

You would think that kind of advertising wouldn't work. Apart from insulting men it implies that women were dumb enough to marry this neanderthal frat boy and that they will enjoy spending the rest of their life cooking every meal and cleaning every spill.

Some of that has to do with sit-com writers being in the majority male but more to do with the star of the show being the one that has to get into situations and most of those stars being male. In "I Love Lucy" the roles are reversed due to the gender of the characters: Lucy, the star, is the blundering focus while Desi plays the role of rule-maker and conscience. The star has to be the one we see getting into trouble and for a long time that star was "Dad" or "Son." Something I have always liked about "Family Guy" is as the series has progressed Lois has moved away from "voice of reason" and into wacky hijinks of her own. Of course they are Family Guy Hijinks ("Where did you get that tattoo?" "I don't know Peter, meth's a hell of a drug.") and it really has to do with the show being more of an "ensemble" and less a star vehicle. Plus I think Alex Borstein is hot so perhaps my judgment is clouded.
