Miku and the other Vocaloids still sound fairly obviously robotic, even with recent improvements. Imo they're not really a viable replacement for actual humans, but they do fill another niche. It seems to me a huge part of why they're so wildly popular is they provide a medium for artistic expression: you can use the program for whatever songs you write and have a cute anime girl to project whatever personality goes with the song onto. And on the fan end you can find pretty much any genre that you already like, only again, with a cute anime girl singing it.
