I know a guy who decided to walk cross country on a $0 budget. He says it was surprising how many locals were willing to offer a warm meal and a place for you to crash the night. When he couldn't find a house to stay, he would just sleep under a bridge. For food he would fast for the day, and late evening he would go to any restaurant or grocery store and ask for leftovers. There are a lot of people willing to help out there.
