In my experience my race (white) did play a role in how I lived, but I never got into any serious shit over it.

I was in 12 Upper (Light Side) C-95 and did the rest of my bid in 8 Upper of C-76. Where were you?

Where the hell is "Rykers Island Jail"?

Because that misspelling is making me feel like calling bullshit on you.

So answer these simple questions if you don't mind:

In NY, what boro were you arrested in?

What Building and House were you in at Rikers?

What color uniform did you wear?

EDIT: Fixed spelling errors of my own!

EDIT 2: Fuck. I originally had it as "borough." Whatever I'll leave it up as penance. I fucking fumbled this one badly...

Don't tell me you don't see it...

I'm counting the days until this incredibly confusing language gatekeeping just goes away. And it will.

Slurs, outdated nomenclature, and hate speech? Totally out of bounds. No argument there.

You have a preferred pronoun? Sure.

But this idea that it's somehow productive to look for controversies where none exist is baffling to me. And then, if you look under this comment, you see people taking it very personally which only proves the point further and begs the question:

Would anyone have complained if she just used the word "folks" with its normal spelling?

Because I seriously doubt it.

C-75? Isn't that the Beacon? Because the Beacon was fucking (and probably still is) insane when I was there. I had two visits turned around because the Island got locked down due to violence in there.

Maybe it's a different building. Mind you it's been a while so I've kind of forgot the building numbers (plus it's not an experience I like to think about too often!).

The way one story went was that during the Puerto Rican Day Parade (2007) the Latin Kings in one house wanted watch coverage but a couple of Bloods wanted the NBA Playoffs... and shit just escalated from there and ended with a stabbing.

That was the rumor anyway.

EDIT: BTW I was one of those addicts, but they had big boy felonies in there as well. I started off with a B but plead out to a D. It was back when the DA first started giving city time for felonies.
