From what I have been reading; it takes 10% of the water to make an aquaponic farm vs a traditional farm. Hydroponics waste water because the chemical water needs to be dumped every so often. Aquaponics is basically like a large lake, and is a closed loop system --> fresh nutrient enriched water goes to the plants, the plants remove everything, and fresh water is returned to the fish tank to get more nutrients.

I dont understand why we would need lots of land to farm with. Using hydroponics/aquaponics with LED grow lights allows skyscrapers to become massive farms. Currently they are just growing things like lettuce (small); but in 20 years I don't see why we wouldn't be growing things upwards instead of outwards.

Aquaponics uses less water then traditional farming; so that's cheaper right there. As for the light; that is an issues. Although using LED's is 40% less energy then regular grow lights; it's still much higher then free. That being said, farm equipment just seems part of the territory, so getting solar panels or whatever means of renewable energy should probably be in the budget for anything on that massive of a scale. http://www.gereports.com/post/91250246340/lettuce-see-the-future-japanese-farmer-builds was one of the articles I read a bit ago.
