As far as I understand it we don't really remember anything, rather we reconstruct the memory anew from the details we associate with the memory of the memory.

Also I know it's apparently incredibly easy to cause people to invent memories where none existed.

One experiment had scientists showing old family photos to subjects with the difference of them having been doctored to include people that were never there. When questioned about who these non-existent people were the subjects would often invent new memories wholesale to explain it.
