I was hoping you'd say Meryl Streep. She's wonderful.

Hi! Is there a way for people who love elephants to interact with them in a way that is a.) safe for the human and b.) safe for the elephant?

A human approaching a wild elephant isn’t safe. A human going to a tourist attraction likely means that the elephant has been abused or tortured.

Is there a middle ground where people who love elephants can interact with them and know they’re well taken care of, happy, and not abused?

Hi Caitlin!

First of all, thank you so much for doing this AMA! I am a huge fan of you and The Order of the Good Death and am so glad you're hanging out with us on reddit today!

I was an anthropology major during my undergraduate years. One of my favorite things about anthropology was the ability to take a glimpse into features of my own culture and frame them as unique (and even at times peculiar) with respect to other cultures, instead of just assuming the way I did things was "right" or "normal." I wish the Order of the Good Death and the Ask a Mortician series existed back when I was in college, because I am sure they would have inspired me to explore death more deeply through an anthropological lens. Now that I am no longer an undergraduate, I am struggling to find ways to engage my interest in our cultural approach to death outside of an academic context. Here are my two questions for you:

  1. Do you have any advice for how I can go about non-academically exploring the cultural themes related to how we approach/deal with death in our own culture/community? (I also live in California!)

  2. What is the one, biggest change you would like to see with respect to the mainstream, American approach to death or the death industry? (It could be social, legal, political, etc.)

Thank you so much again for the awesome work you do and for being here today!

What is the best way for Americans to keep themselves informed about the events taking place in Iraq? And what are your suggestions for how we can hold our government accountable for its actions there?
