I am an incoming freshman at Berkeley (I believe I have a stronger math background than most freshmen: did calculus 1, 2, 3, linear algebra, a bit of category theory, audited group theory at Stanford with Ravi Vakil, did IMO training and was on my country's team though I did not compete) and am interested in researching with you. What should I do to prepare? Do you ever do research with undergrads? Which class standing if so? Also am starting from Math 1A at cal because I do not have AP credit

Do you have any recommendations of specific textbooks I can study or courses I should take? Am definitely thinking of taking Math 114, 250A and 252 and finishing Dummit and Foote's Abstract Algebra (read and worked through problems up to section 8.3) though a professor suggested Algebra by Artin might be more useful

I talked to an advisor (CS department not math though, am intended double major and was only allowed to talk to one of the departments at orientation) and they said if I do not have AP/IB credit there is no way to skip 1A. I briefly considered doing 1A and H1B (there is no H1A as far as I know) at the same time but I was told this was not possible either, and I would be taking 16 technical units which might not be the best idea on a first semester while having a full time job
