Very sad, but not unusual. You reminded him too much of the darkest time of his life. As much as you were supportive and caring, he likely had a hard time transitioning back to life on the outside and needed to put all reminders behind him- which unfortunately meant you too.

If it’s any consolation , I had a friend get cancer and I was his nursemaid through surgery, radiation and even a second surgery. After about 6-7 months he was feeling stronger, so he said he wanted to take me to lunch to thank me. He stood me up. Apologized, but ghosted back to the unreliable prick he was before cancer.
