Not OP, but also a native american. Sherman Alexie is a great author, and I am a huge fan. He's one of the reasons I became a writer.

Though I cannot express how accurate his representation of reservation life is (I didn't grow up on one, afterall), a lot of the themes he speaks of aren't just limited to those on the reservation. Alcoholism is a big issue in my family. My uncle, in fact, has gotten in to quite a few accidents, and had many DUI's over the years.

Though there is evidence to show that these things are genetic, I think a lot of it can show up in anyones life, depending on their situation. Regardless of that, Sherman Alexie's portrayals of life, not just native american, are very vivid. I'd recommend his shorty story collections, The Lone Ranger and Tanto Fistfight in Heaven and War Dances in addition to his pseudo-autobiography.

To be honest, I feel that if we have makeup to make Brad Pitt look super old, we can make Carell and Colbert look like Ace and Gary. :D
