The Guardian just broke the story on an investigation they've probably been working on for months. The Chicago Tribune doesn't have the sources that The Guardian has been cultivating during their investigation, so they're reporting what they can-- The Guardian's investigation (which they can't independently verify with unnamed sources) and what the police department says (which they can independently verify).

You can't compare a long investigation with one day's worth of reaction. What you need to keep an eye on is where The Chicago Tribune goes on the story from here-- whether they continue to dig or call it a day with the police statement.
