Wait, what, Tim Gunn said that? That's awful! Is there any context in wich I could take it as not so bad?
I think the context that Tim Gunn was speaking was that there are simple differences in bone structure between men and women, in particular hips. So he was saying he's conflicted because there would still have to be tailoring differences. And if you are at a womens fashion show, but seeing clothes tailored for a mans hips, it's somewhat misleading. Tim pretty clearly says if you had a man with women's hips, it wouldn't be a problem.
I think that's a very fair context. Tim is not denying anyone anything. He's pointing out that there are structural differences and how fair it is to classify if those differences exist.

A few questions...
1) Does anyone call you 'Tony Trucks'?
2) A lot of college players don't make it to the NFL. What factor allowed you to make it?
3) How did you find out your injury was 'career-ending'? What was the first thing you thought about after finding out?

And that's what Tim Gunn is saying. "... having your pelvis broken and expanded..." is really him saying that he doesn't care what gender a person is or was as long as they have the right proportions in the end.
