Other countries in Europe went through something like that. France largely succeeded in wiping out the culture of southern France during the Albigensian Crusade. The Normans wiped out most of the Anglo-Saxon culture int he Harrying of the North, setting the stage for a new fusion culture (English). Germany tried to do it too, though they weren't that successful thanks to losing a lot of land in the World Wars and people getting moved all around. Though there is still a North/South divide and Swiss Germans show how different the various German groups could be.

You sometimes have the reverse, where a group tries to recreate part of their identity that was lost. Israelis are probably the best example of this -- they revived the basically dead language of Hebrew which had only been used for religious and scholarly purposes instead of using the more widely spoken Yiddish. It's almost as if Italy had decided to revive Latin after reunification.
