How much experience programming/developing did you have before you made your first game?

I'm currently a community manager for a free half life 2 mod, and am looking to work in the games industry professionally. At the moment, I'm trying to get into QA as a starting point, but it's honestly really rough. Do you have any advice on where to get a toehold in the industry?
