I asked my congressman what his stance was on Net Neutrality and his response was essentially "Net Neutrality is a thing." Is he going to be more inclined to listen to me or a $364 billion company? Here's his response.

Thank you for contacting me regarding net neutrality. It is good to hear from you.

As you may know, in recent years there has been an ongoing debate between the Federal >Communications Commission (FCC), Congress, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), technology businesses, and pubic activists about the policy of net neutrality. Net neutrality is a term used to describe an open-access Internet policy under which all legal Internet content is treated equally and delivered to consumers without discrimination by the ISPs - companies such as Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable.

In response to potential plans by several ISPs and content providers, mainly media streaming services, to transmit and deliver some Internet content at faster speeds in exchange for fees, many activists have voiced concerns that prioritizing certain web traffic for profit will be highly detrimental to consumers. Proponents of strong net neutrality guidelines assert that allowing content providers to pay for faster and more direct access to consumers would make the Internet a closed platform that stifles innovation, allows small technology start-ups to be crowded out of the market, and lets ISPs block or delay certain Internet traffic for political or economic reasons.

On December 14, 2017, the FCC voted to repeal the Net Neutrality rules. Chairman Ajit Pai argued that the old rules stifled innovation, growth, and consumers’ Internet access. Many are understandably concerned with the changes made. In fact, there have been several bills introduced that would provide a potential solution to this issue. Rest assured, I will continue to monitor this matter as it further develops and will keep your views in mind as I review legislation regarding Internet access.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I encourage you to visit my website at www.donovan.house.gov to get the most current information on my work in Congress or to sign up to receive my newsletter. I hope that you will remain in touch on future issues of importance to you.
