If you had to fight, would you choose to fight one horse sized penis or one hundred penis sized horses?

Most common causes:

  • The barcode label fell off.
  • The bag has multiple barcodes on it and the automatic system doesn't know which to use. Only one barcode at a time, can be on multiple labels but only one at a time. Take the old stickers off.
  • Have an ID tag on the outside and also inside the most obvious pocket. When the tag falls off they need something to definitively identify it, black samsonite isn't good enough.
  • You're flying with weird fruit or meat that set off the CT's and your bag is sitting in queue to be searched. Asia/Latin America.
  • Airport sortation system broke down or was overwhelmed and your bag missed the flight and is sitting in a pile with hundreds of other ones.
  • When they load the plane, the hold is separated into different areas, or sometimes containers. Hold 1 or container X will contain connection bags to Y, when they unload the plane they don't read the labels, they just take the bags. So if your bag goes in the wrong hold/container, it'll take the wrong routing.
  • The smaller the airline, the more likely things are to go sideways. They might have 2 flights per day and 1 employee, and therefore are too cheap to expedite it today/tomorrow. That leaves your bag sitting in a common area of the airport for a couple of days, waiting for a mistake to happen.

Having said all that, it's getting better.

Barcode readers are appearing everywhere now, some airlines are even experimenting with scanning as they load the plane. They're also scanned when they enter the airport and such.

The new practice is called IATA RP 753.

  • Frozen chicken that fell out and became unfrozen in the airport system.
  • Seafood that fell out and was in a liquid state when found. Could be smelled through two ziplocks from 20m away.
  • Ground up ivory used as an aphrodisiac.
  • Fruit always infested with insects.
