My friends dad is a surgeon. While he was studying surgery, he travelled between Australia and the Royal College of Surgeons in London numerous times by working as a ship's doctor for free passage (don't know if he was payed on top of that). This was around 35 years ago, so I don't know how well this applies today.

If I had a ship, I'd hire you as my artist in residence.

I have a few questions:

1) At what point do you say you can speak a language (e.g. I know a few words of German and can put a simple sentence together, but I wouldn't say I truly speak it)

2) When you are speaking in a particular language, are you also thinking in it, or do you think in your first language then conciously translate it to your target language?
