I think the fact that we form connections outside our neighborhoods via internet is worth mentioning. I don't know the neighbors on my block but I've forged lasting friendships in online games. (My best friends met in WoW and are now married.) I'm an introvert who hates going out but here I am commenting on reddit.

Given the insane fracturing of culture into a million hobbies and subcultures, this strategy also makes more sense to me. My physical neighbors are statistically unlikely to read the same books I do, watch the same movies, play the same games, but when I go online to the communities that celebrate or even do these things, instantly we have something in common. Likely many somethings. Unlike with my neighbors.
