The federal government cannot force local law enforcement to enforce anything. There have been several Supreme Court cases about it. Its called the anti-commandeering doctrine.

According to this, home invasions when a household member is present occur about 200k times a year with around 50k of those turning in to violent crimes against the present household member.

Meanwhile there were 24k suicides with a firearm in 2018.

Seems you are several times more likely to be victimized in your own home during a burglary than to commit suicide with a firearm.

Imo this makes it pretty clear that keeping a firearm locked up and inaccessible in an emergency is a greater risk than not.
