Presumably he saw how to get to 954 first. Note that (100+6) x 9 = 954. There isn't a 9 but there is a 3 and 75/25=3 so you can do (100+6) x 3 x (75/25) and get 954. That's only 2 away and the only number left to use is 50. But in getting 954 at some point you've divided by 25 and 50/25 is 2. Hence before you divide by 25 subtract 50 - that's like subtracting 2 after you divide by 25. Therefore (((100+6) x 3 x 75)-50)/25 = 952.
