How many generations after you die do you care about? And do you care about all of them equally? What's the shape of that curve?

I think if we place equal weight on all future generations, we end up with the issue of individual present-day lives not mattering as much as two or three lives a million years from now... Which seems a bit silly.

Not to mention the potential for infinite future people.

Or, put another way, imagine you can save 1 life today in Ukraine, or you can save 2 lives in Ukraine 1000 years from now. In both cases they are strangers to you. Which would you choose?
