The gang members I met inside told me you could go through sort of an initiation, but in reverse. You basically agree to let them beat the crap out of you. They do that, it's a real beatdown, but they obviously stop short of killing you. Then you're in the clear. (That assumes everything was amicable in the first place and will remain that way-- you can't decide to switch gangs, it's for people leaving the life.) A cellmate told me they did it to his brother when he moved back to Puerto Rico; even though he wasn't intentionally leaving the gang, he was just moving, they had to do it anyway.
