This is what I don't get. A drilling company moves into an area and doesn't test the ground water in the area? That is the stupidest thing I have heard and is just a shitty defense of "well I don't know what the problem was before so I couldn't have caused it". I have a fair bit of knowledge of the problems up in Pavillion WY and if the company had did the tests before the drilling they would be fine. I am all for them getting completely screwed because I think it is up to them to prove they didn't cause the problem. The funny part is that it was known long ago they had crap water up that way but if you drill and don't test I think you hang the company out to dry.

They do in most cases now. I think it should be a part of the drilling permit process.

TL;DR: People buy natural diamonds precisely because they have been led to believe that they have a high value.
You forgot to mention that the high value is derived from market manipulation.
