Why does your android app need to have the capability to see my SMS messages?

I hate to be that guy.

But does that not sound like BS to you?

As an android developer I am very familiar with what can be done once this permission is granted.

You are completely correct. More permissions would be nice.

But I think the "verify your phone number" reason is a little silly, I mean, is there NO OTHER way to verify a stinking number other than using the capability to view ALL my messages. I think the trade off seems a little obvious.

Text me a pin number. Works great.

Some of my texts contain extremely person information. Including things like text banking and password resets. There is zero accountability on how this stuff is stored. Do I think that Facebook is actively monitoring users text messages.. Absolutely Not! But this just opens another avenue for my information to get into the wrong hands, whether it comes from Facebook or not. Also apps get corrupted.

Facebook's app can confirm a cell phone number without this permission easily. There are functions to retrieve the devices number and to authentic the cell users account. Facebook knows damn well that they don't "need" this permission to confirm a cell number.
