Another mate, Marines again, was in the first attack on Helmund, had a good chunk of his foot blown off and that was the end of his miliary career pretty much.

Another one, Army Engineer (sapper) spent most of his time playing cards and digging holes!

Yeah it's a mixed bag. I hope you do what is right for you, because at the end of the day, that's the only person who's approval you need!

Mate of mine joined the Royal Marines years back. Ended up doing 10 years in there. He "levelled up" (his words, not mine) to a Royal Marine Commando and was being shortlisted for the SAS (I think this means spotters were at their training for some time - but who knows really).

He's done tours of Afghanistan and Iraq.

He did Libya in 2011 running relief efforts. Transporting refugees and civilians out of the warzone. When he come back from that he was a changed man. Stopped putting in for new training and just served the rest of his time on base training others and getting super fit. I asked him once about it and he just said "there's only so many body parts and so much blood you can clean off the deck of a ship with a hose, mate" and I've never asked again. Probably some shit he'll take to his grave.
