I have and own the M50 and my friend has thewirecutter recommendation.

It all boils down to personal taste, the m50 has a real premium feel and I like its sound better and I personally prefer the stiffer ear pads. my friend who goes to college, likes the sony model which he bought at my recommendation because its smaller than m50 and fits in his bag as a college goer.

I would advice to visit your local hi-fi group and ask them to test those headphones...
