My parents and I took that cruise in 2000. While I was off playing in the pool and hanging with a friend I randomly ran into in the restaurant on the second day, my parents hit these auctions. We walked off that ship having bought 3 paintings (2 Marc Chagall lithographs and something else I can't remember).

I think it's just something for people to do. They clearly have disposable income (would've stayed home if they didn't), and not everyone likes to sit in a casino. Besides, if the auction house has a good deal with the ship, it's not a bad source of income.
