I've seen this incorporated in fantastic ways when I taught in prison (of all places).

We taught for the most part a curriculum very similar to a late middle/early high school curriculum. Those of us who were "educators" got frustrated when the people who came from a corrections background said "you have to make it relevant to them."

Some genius started working "real life" into his lesson plans. When he taught a standard 3 paragraph essay, he did a normal "write an essay" keystone project, then did an in-class "okay, write a letter to someone using the 5 paragraph format."

In math, when we taught percentages, after the skills, homework, tests, we'd talk loans, taxes, mortgages, etc., calling back the exact lessons we just taught. we'd do landscaping and construction when we did geometry.

etc., etc. etc. the problem is that "life skills" are very... fluid.
