What language would have been the most useful to know apart from English, and how useful was English?

Yo be fair there are a lot of people that live under the poverty line but don't live such bad lives (i.e starvation). I live in Mexico and many rural areas live under the poverty line, but they have a little land so they can plant their own food or have some chickens. Again, not a great standard of living but under poverty line does not mean starving to death.
