It is my thought that SpaceX is going to approach NASA someday in the next 5 years and say something like "We can take 12 astronauts to Mars for the cost of $3 billion/ launch, are you interested?", and NASA will say "YES!!!", provided they can prove it is safe. By the time that happens, BFR will have had a number of crewed missions in Earth orbit, and at least one that circumnavigates the Moon.
