I'd love to know if there a coaching period at the start of the job, or is the training extensive enough that you are left to your own devices on day one?

Also not uncommon to do split shifts in the UK. I think the degree to which it's useful or desirable plays on a few factors. In one pub kitchen job lived about 30 mins from work, so heading home on my 2 hour break felt pointless, and it wasn't in a city, so it wasn't that easy to go do errands. I'd usually end up just going for a walk, sitting and reading and eating a meal. I personally didn't like the split shift there as it felt like I couldn't switch off and leave, so I was just at work for longer unpaid. But if the other factors were different it would have been great.
