Also not uncommon to do split shifts in the UK. I think the degree to which it's useful or desirable plays on a few factors. In one pub kitchen job lived about 30 mins from work, so heading home on my 2 hour break felt pointless, and it wasn't in a city, so it wasn't that easy to go do errands. I'd usually end up just going for a walk, sitting and reading and eating a meal. I personally didn't like the split shift there as it felt like I couldn't switch off and leave, so I was just at work for longer unpaid. But if the other factors were different it would have been great.

I'd love to know if there a coaching period at the start of the job, or is the training extensive enough that you are left to your own devices on day one?
