Just to play Devil's advocate a little bit, the two songs you mention (Thrift Shop and Fancy) share a lot more in common other than just being performed by white rappers. They are both insanely fun, catchy songs that have a wacky music video that appeals to a wide audience. Just look at the recent success of Weird Al's newest album. There appears to be a demand for fun, light-hearted party music right now that allows songs like Thrift Shop and Fancy to succeed. Macklemore has plenty of serious songs that have not, and will not, ever reach the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

So before we immediately point to the racial angle of this observation, maybe we should acknowledge that it's not the only, and maybe not even the biggest, factor explaining the success of these two songs.
