Don't blame the jury. They were presented by facts, and it is undeniable that OP's father was, indeed, committing a crime, so for them to not find the him guilty would be a grave miscarriage of justice.

I believe OP has said elsewhere that the massive sentence was a combination of incredibly strict mandatory sentencing laws and a judge that was later disbarred.
