First: the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. Who would've guessed that the Deep South wouldn't be a great hockey market?

Second: There are only 7 Canadian teams, and hockey is one of Canada's national pastimes. You can't realistically expect every American team to compete with that sort of ingrained fandom, especially not in some of the non-traditional American hockey markets (California, Texas, Phoenix- uh I mean Arizona)

So it's not a matter of waning American interest in the sport - American hockey is stronger than ever - it's a matter of American interest growing to match Canadian interest.
