There have been cultural taboos regarding incest in nearly every society that has ever existed. Humans don't need a deep understanding of genetics to know incest is a big no no.

Have you read Mark Plotkin's "A shaman's apprentice"? It is an American ethnobotanist's autobiography of his experiences in the Amazon working with shaman's with the hopes of finding new plants that could be potentially used in medicine. It is a fascinating well-written peek into rainforest culture from a western perspective.

Thanks for doing the AMAs. Don't listen to the naysayers. Your story is fascinating.

Your struggles remind me of the teachings of Buddha. Life is suffering and the way out of suffering is deep intrinsic understanding through inner reflection. While he was born a prince, he chose the lifestyle of an ascetic, abstaining from nearly all worldly and bodily pleasures. He came to realize what he called the middle path (all things in moderation) yet maintained his inner search. Your years in solitary seemed to have awarded you such an experience, and seemed to come out a much more grounded, refined person. Thank you for sharing your story.
